Why play it? - Ideal for players looking for safety and strategic clarity with Black. - Helps build strong foundations in closed and semi-open pawn structures. - Less tactical and theoretical than the Sicilian Defense, but still playable at the highest level. - Offers a natural transition into balanced middlegames and solid endgames. Reputation - Considered one of the most reliable and respected defenses against 1.e4. - Used by many world champions: Capablanca, Botvinnik, Petrossian, Karpov, Anand… - Valued for its robustness and resistance to White’s direct attacks. - Frequently used in classical games, but also in rapid and blitz because of its stability.
